Gotti is currently readying his third album in as many years, The Art of Hustle, after founding his own label, Collective Music Group, last year. He’s collaborated with the likes of Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne and YG, and has managed to keep himself at the forefront of the scene by constantly working with the hottest new artists his last album featured J. Gotti, who’s real name is Mario Mims, has remained a prominent figure in the hip hop scene ever since, with a significant cult fanbase allowing him to go on and make the likes of Back 2 da Basics, Live from the Kitchen and last year’s I Am. It’s no new thing for rap artists to talk about having moved from a criminal past into the music industry, but Yo Gotti wasn’t beating around the bush when he titled his first album, which dropped back in 2000, From Da Dope Game to Da Rap Game.

Whilst proudly from the south and having Southern influences including the Three 6 Maifa and Skinny Pimp, Mims Northern indluences include the likes of N.W.A and Tupac Shakur. The sound and character of Mim’s music is undeniably Dirty South gangster rap and he derives his name from the infamous New York mafia ring leader John Gotti in a similar vein to Big Gotti, Doni Gotti and Juan Gotti. His debut independent album titled “From Da Dope Game 2 Da Rap Game arrived in 2000, followed by “Self-Explanatory” in 2001, and released through TVT Records “Life” in 2003 and “Back 2 da Basics” in 2006. Mims started rapping around the age of 14 under the moniker Lil Yo before building a strong and extensive catalogue for himself in the early 2000s.
